PlayStation 4 was all the rage a few years back. Now that the PS5 release is fast approaching, it might not take you long to start considering retiring from your PS4.
Before you decide to get rid of it, though, you may want to keep it in your game round by using it in conjunction with your PC. Connecting a PS4 controller to a computer takes a little time, a mini USB cable, and a few easy steps.
There are 3 Method to use PS4 controller on pc
- Connecting with Steam
- Connect using DS4Windows
- Connecting with a Sony Wireless Adapter
Connecting with Steam
Steam, the most popular PC gaming portal, offers original controller support for DualShock 4. Using your DualShock 4 to play Steam games is incredibly easy – all you have to do is:
Step 1: Make sure your Steam client is updated.
Step 2: Plug your controller into your PC.
problem solved! well almost. Even though Steam is up to date, you may encounter some hiccups when setting up your controller. Steam supports the DS4 as a platform, but that doesn’t mean every computer game automatically works with a controller. If you play Dark Souls III, you’ll see what we mean. Steam recognizes the controller, but Dark Souls III does not. If you find yourself in that boat, or want to use your controller wirelessly without using Steam, you’re not in luck. DS4Windows might be the solution for you.
Connect using DS4Windows
This solution requires little setup, but it’s still the best way to get your DualShock 4 computer and control controllers to talk without major headaches. You can connect the DualShock 4 controller to your computer using DS4Windows, a third-party application, in wired or wireless mode (if your computer has Bluetooth). Unless you are buying the adapter, this is the best option if you plan to play games through Origin, uPlay, Goji or other portals.

DS4Windows is basically tricking your system into believing it’s using an Xbox 360 controller, but you’ll still have access to motion controls and even a touchpad for many games. .
Step 1: Download the latest version of DS4Windows, which can be found on the application’s official website.
Step 2: Extract it using an archive manager such as WinRAR or 7Zip. You will then have two files, DS4Windows and DS4Update.
Step 3: Double-click DS4Windows to run the installer, which will prompt the following dialogue box:
Step 4: Follow the on-screen instructions to begin installing the driver. Installation is fast, so you will not have to wait long. If you are running Windows 7 or later, click Install 360 Driver – The driver is preloaded on Windows 8 and 10 machines.
Step 5: Once you complete both installations, your controller is ready to be connected. Simply connect the DualShock 4 to your PC using a micro USB cable (the same type used on most Android devices). It will also charge the DualShock 4 battery, but to use the DualShock 4 wirelessly, you’ll need to connect the controller to your PC via Bluetooth.
Step 6: In DualShock 4, press and hold the PS button for three seconds or until the light bar flashes.
Step 7: Open the Bluetooth settings on your PC.
Step 8: Connect to Wireless Controller.
Step 9: If prompted to input a pairing code, enter “0000”.
Step 10: Click Finish on the DS4Windows installer.
Customizing your setup
The main interface of DS4Windows allows players to adjust almost any aspect of the controller to the color of the LED light bar. The default controller profile should work on the latest PC games, especially if they are designed to work with an Xbox controller.
For games that aren’t easily customizable thanks to the controllers, users can select pre-made specific profiles or create their own, and assign a keystroke to more or less one of the DualShock buttons. Touch panel sensitivity, macros and game-specific profiles are supported – just look around to see what works best for you.
Troubleshooting while connecting the PS4
If you run into issues while using your DualShock 4 controller, you have a couple of options.
Step 1: First, it is possible to hide the DS4 controller on the Settings tab. This is useful if your DualShock 4 takes precedence over other connected controllers – like the Xbox 360 controller – or if you want to make sure your DS4Windows settings take precedence over the Steam DualShock 4 configuration.
Step 2: Likewise, if the DualShock 4 isn’t working properly while other input devices are connected, there’s a button at the bottom of the DS4Windows that you can specifically select to connect the DualShock 4, allowing it to play through the game. becomes the main input source for
Step 3: The second file included in the DS4Windows installation, DS4Update, will look for the most advanced version of DS4Windows and install it automatically. You should check this update regularly to make sure that the latest version of DualShock 4 is running at the highest level on your PC.
Connecting with a Sony Wireless Adapter
While we’re not huge fans of this particular method, we do believe that SonyWireless has ceased production of Sony’s wireless adapters. GameStop even went so far as to record significant value on the item, ending at 97 cents. We found these listings, which are still trending online (though not for $25). If you want to go this route when trying to connect your PS4 controller, we’ll let you know about it. Here are some simple steps that can help you when you’re ready to connect using a wireless adapter:
Step 1: Plug the Sony Wireless Adapter into your PC.
Step 2: Plug the other end of the cord into your DualShock 4 Controller. The two will pair automatically.

Because of the canceled adapter, this process isn’t the best overall. However, it’s still the simplest means of establishing a link between your PS4 Controller and PC. Make sure to free up some space for this 2-inch adapter, which is an extra expense for effortless connectivity. All that being said, you still have many other options when it comes to connecting your controller if you can’t seem to find this discontinued adapter.
