2. Panda Free Antivirus — Best for Beginners

Free antivirus is lightweight, secure, and easy to use. Everything is laid out on the dashboard in an appealing and intuitive way. This is great for beginners who do not want to worry about a lot of advanced settings – just open it and let it run.

Panda may be one of the least known brands on this list, but its antivirus scanner did particularly well in my tests, with a 100% virus detection rate. The built-in firewall is also very strong, as it blocks more intrusions than any other free antivirus I’ve tested, including Windows Firewall.

I really like that Panda Free Antivirus comes with a private virtual network (VPN). I always recommend using a VPN if you are on a public Wi-Fi network – not only do you show all your data to the network administrator, even unsecured Wi-Fi networks are easy to crack. Although Panda’s VPN is free, it has a data limit of 150MB per day – this is fine for web browsing and email, but not enough data for things like streaming or file sharing. You can only get unlimited VPN data in the Panda Dome program Premium.

3. Kaspersky Security Cloud (Free) — Best for Added Features

Free is a great free antivirus package. Includes Kaspersky’s cloud-based malware scanning engine, which captured 100% of the threats thrown at it during testing.

Not only does the Security Cloud scan for malware, clean the system, and use an active scan to block new threats, but it also provides complete privacy protection with a VPN, password manager, and darknet scan.

Very good VPN – it didn’t slow down my computer much, and it allowed me to unblock streaming content with geo-restrictions with servers around the world. Unfortunately, there is a daily limit of 200MB, but this is better than the 150MB daily data in Panda’s Free VPN.

The password manager’s limitations are a little worse – you can only save 15 separate entries, which isn’t enough for most users. However, if you have 15 logins that are your top priority, Password Manager automatically generates and fills in specially designed passwords for an additional layer of security.

The dark web scanner is simple but effective. After giving him my vital login information, he regularly checked the database at Have I Been Pwned to see if my information had been shared via the Dark Internet.

4. Bitdefender Antivirus Free — Best for Simple Windows Protection

Free is a great choice for users looking for an antivirus scanner that they should not think about after installation. Bitdefender is designed to run in the background, with only critical alerts in case of suspicious activity in the program. Malware scans, detection, and removal are done automatically unless you decide to change the settings.

If you’re looking for more features like a password manager, parental controls, a dark web monitor, or VPN. This is not the product for you (you will need something like Norton 360 for that). However, it is still a good antivirus program. And its simple design means that it will not slow down your computer at all.

As we saw in our full review, Bitdefender’s malware scanner is one of the most powerful scanners on the market. And its advanced protection feature now extends ransomware detection – any suspicious behavior on your computer will be frozen immediately. This scanner is really fast – malware and ransomware processes are only discovered moments after they are downloaded or compressed.

Phishing protection and fraud protection features are good as well. Bitdefender marked all the latest known phishing sites. And warned me when I was asked to enter private data on three different suspicious web forms.
